Sleeping bag manufacturers often incorrectly assume that the only way to reduce weight for minimalists is to either use the most expensive and lightweight insulation available or simply use less insulation. The North Face approached the whole weight-to-warmth challenge by using a special Weld-It Construction to eliminate heavier stitching without letting the insulation shift around and create cold spots. At a little over two pounds, the 20F-rated Fission Sleeping Bag is the warmest and heaviest offering in this new Weld-It collection. It's insulated with a synthetic Climashield continuous filament insulation that's highly compressible and never clumps or shifts. Because every gram matters, The North Face used heat-transfer logos to eliminate the weight normally associated with embroidery threads. The Fission does have a zippered vent along the ergonomic vaulted footbox for cooling, but the foot circumference is a narrower 38-inch circumference than the 40-inch circumference found on many other sleeping bags made by The North Face (the same foot circumference applies to the large size, too). Like other minimalist sleeping bags, the Fission has a shorter side zipper (about one-third length), but The North Face retained the zipper draft tube and face comfort tube around the fitted hood.
