About Us

Sure we can tell you all about us, and how Matt Johnston, the creator of thebackpacker.com decided to create a site where outdoor enthusiasts can compare prices on name brand gear to find the best deal, but who wants to hear that. You really want to hear about Eugene.

Picture this: Eugene, being the environmentally conscious person that he is, is on his daily bicycle commute to work. All of a sudden, a large truck carrying extremely flammable liquids blows a tire and crashes into a ditch on the side of the road. Eugene, being the socially conscious person that he is, goes over to the wreck to offer his assistance. Eugene assesses the situation, and all he can say is "Bugger". The extremely flammable liquid in the truck must be kept refrigerated at all times, but the wreck has busted one of the coolant hoses. The world is doomed!

Eugene, being the adept decision maker that he is, pulls out his handy multi-tool with the special hex wrench head, and fixes the leaking hose. Thus, a global disaster is averted.

So Eugene saved the world, what does that have to do with Gearapalooza?

Well, the story actually starts a month prior. Eugene was in need of a new multi-tool since he had recently given away his multi-tool to a cub scout helping an old lady crossing the street (different story, stick with me people). So Eugene, being the budget minded person that he is, decided to research new mutli-tools before making his purchase. After his exhaustive search for a multi-tool that also included a hex wrench, Eugene finally decided on the MultiToolCorp MegaTool X4. There was only one problem; the MultiToolCorp MegaTool X4 had a regular retail price of $36.99 and Eugene could only spend $29.99 on his new multi-tool (Eugene's conscious doesn't let him overspend on purchases).

What was Eugene to do? Why, consult Gearapalooza of course. By using Gearapalooza's price comparisons, Eugene, being the internet savvy person that he is, was able to find that NiceCo had the MultiToolCorp MegaTool X4 on sale for $28.99. Eureka! Not only could Eugene afford a new MultiToolCorp MegaTool X4, but it was under his budget!

So that, my friends, his how Eugene, being the ever so smart little gnome that he is, was able to save the world for only $28.99.

The preceding story is a dramatization and did not actually occur. However, Eugene's name has not been changed in the story and he does actually save the world from time to time.
